Question # 178: One of the problems that I am having with my new horse is that he frequently drifts in the direction of the barn or towards other horses when I am riding him.
He is young (rising 5) and still green but generally a good boy. What I have been doing is to try to turn earlier when I expect that he will do this and use an opening rein and outside leg. Are there other approaches that work better? Any exercises that you might suggest to improve results with this issue? (Nancy)
Hi Nancy!
This is a common problem with young horses, to at least some degree. Being herd animals, they take comfort in the company of their friends. What you have to do is change the way your horse thinks of you. If you can get him to start to think of you as a member of his herd, and in fact his herd leader, you can re-direct his focus back to you. Once you have achieved that, your horse will begin to look to you for comfort when he is nervous or insecure. (Click on Question Title above (in blue) to read full answer)
