Hi Sharon!

Walking up and down hills is one of the most productive strengthening exercises that we can do with our horses! Because they have less momentum than they do in the trot and the canter, they have to use sheer power to push their body weight up the hill. Going down the hill, you get increased "sit" behind, with more weight being carried over the horse's hocks. The benefits are enormous.
